ESPN's Fran Fraschilla Visits Bill Battle Coliseum

Fran Fraschilla was in Birmingham on Monday to speak to the Birmingham Tipoff Club at its first Basketball Luncheon of the year. On the way, he stopped into campus to visit with Athletic Director Joe Dean and Men's Basketball Coach Mitch Cole. Fraschilla was impressed with the facilities and spoke highly of the campus and the athletic department.
If you haven't had a chance to see Coach Fraschilla on ESPN you are missing one of basketball's premier color analysts. In addition to doing Big 12 and college games on ESPN, he has become one of the world's experts on International Basketball having covered the World Championships in Turkey this past fall. You will also see him on the NBA's draft day as he reports on the top players from around the world.

ICELAND, GERMANY, LATVIA...BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH BASKETBALL

When I was a young basketball camper, a coach once told me that basketball could take you places you never would have dreamed. 30 years later, I remembered this as I got off the plane in Reykjavic, Iceland to visit former Panther great Jakob Sigurdarson (pictured above) and his family. Jakob is doing very well playing professionally in Sweden and looks like he is in the best shape of his life. What a beautiful place Iceland is! And it happened to be really hot that day...70 degrees!

After visiting another lifelong icelandic friend Brynjar Karl who developed Sideline Sports (http://www.sidelinesports.com/) I was off the Berlin to run a two day camp for some of the 14-16 year old players in the city. The camp went well as we not only taught basketball, but shared some of the guiding principles and Christian values that we use in our main task of developing our student athletes here at Birmingham Southern! The kids worked hard and responded well to a different style of coaching! Berling is great city...As a history major, I was in awe as I biked around what is left of the Berlin Wall and many of the WWII memorials. I met some quality folks who are devoting their lives to serving the people of this great city.

After 3 days in Berlin, my next stop was Riga, Latvia. My intention was to conduct another camp for younger kids (pictured above), but the plan was stalled as a nasty stomach virus broke out at the dorm. After much prayer and consideration, we made the trip to Kuldiga and spent 4 days sweating, training, talking and teaching the game of basketball. I met some lifelong friends in Kristine and Ivo Zonne whose son Davis is the top point guard in Latvia as a 14 year old. It was great to see the beauty of Riga through their experiences growing up in the former Soviet Union.

In all, this was a wonderful experience as basketball once again has opened doors for faith, fellowship and friendship to be shared around the world. I look forward to seeing these young boys from the camps develop as student athletes and one day be leaders and productive in their communities. During the 10 hour flight from Frankfurt to Atlanta, I couldn't help but reflect on how blessed our coaching staff is to get a chance to coach our young men here at BSC. I look forward to the coming season and hope basketball will open doors for them that it has for me all these years....

Our Tradition Remains

As the 2010-2011 school year and season fast approaches, we here at BSC have a chance to pause and reflect on what a great blessing it is for us to carry on the tradition of excellence that has been the standard here for 25 years and far beyond. Often times people ask me what makes BSC such a special place to coach, play, or even watch a game.  The first thing I tell them is to walk into our beautiful coliseum, and just take a minute to look up at the brick wall adorned with championship banners.  BSC has been blessed, the championship banners are plentiful.  Including our share of the conference title last season, the Panthers have been a part of 19 conference championships in the last 27 years, the Panthers have hoisted 2 National Championship banners, have had 2 National Player of the Year Candidates, and 2 National Coach of the Year Candidates. That is a true tradition to be proud of.
I think  more than any trophy or banner that has been held, we can be most proud of the people that BSC Basketball has helped to mold.  The true success lies in the product of men who now positively shape our society.
I challenge all of you who carry on the banner of BSC Basketball to carry it with pride and a sense of responsibility to keep it a standard of excellence in the sports world.

Panthers Finish Season Atop SCAC Standings

The final buzzer has now sounded on the 2009-2010 Panther Basketball season.  This gives us a chance to look back at some of the great accomplishments of the year.
- The Panthers finished tied in First Place of the SCAC East, the first divisional crown for the Panthers since the transition to D III.
- The Panthers posted a 20-5 record for the season, a winning percentage that was tops for any college in the state of Alabama this year.
- The Panthers went undefeated at home in the friendly confines of Bill Battle Coliseum. They truly answered PA announcer Dr. Moxley's familiar cry of "It's time to battle in the Battle".
-The Panthers led the SCAC statistically in Points per Game, Scoring Margin, Assists, Steals, Turnover Margin, Assist to Turnover Ratio, and 3 Pointers made per game. They also were second in the league in Field Goal Percentage and  Three Point Field Goal Percentage.

The record and the stats cannot begin to tell the story.  As a program we are proud to honor our seniors- Aaron Parr, Nathan West, Tyler Marsh, Wheeler Flemming, Roger Williams, and Dominic Whicher!  These players have been a part of returning BSC Basketball back to it's storied tradition of championship level basketball.  This has been a great season, full of games in which our whole team impacted the winning effort.
We, the BSC basketball coaches, tip our hat to all of our players. We also want to send a special thanks to all of the great staff that works so hard to support our efforts- including Mrs. Linda, the workstudy workers, and the marketing class that helped with our January games! We also thank the entire Black Tie Club for their support of our program.  We couldn't do it without you!  We also send out a special thanks to all of those great fans that make Bill Battle such a great place to play.  We love our Panther Pit, and appreciate all of those who came out to support us this year.
Go Panthers!

Panthers complete season sweep in The Battle

Monday night was a special occasion for many reasons:

First was the honoring of 6 Seniors on Senior night.  It was a great chance for the BSC faithful to show their thanks to Aaron Parr, Tyler Marsh, Roger Williams, Wheeler Flemming, Nathan West, and Dominic Whicher.  These players have all been very special to our program.  They have all played a great role in returning BSC Basketball to a championship level.

Second, it was mustache night.  All of the players, coaches, and most of the fans showed off their best mustache.  I must say there were some great ones, some funny ones, and some downright scary ones
( Coach Vines party of one)

Thirdly, Monday was a night that saw the Panthers achieve one of our season goals.  With the victory over Huntingdon, BSC moved to 15-0 for the season in the confines of The Battle ( I only wish I could say it as cool as Dr. Moxly over the PA).  As a program, we are very proud to see our Panthers surpass the 20 win mark and complete the home game season sweep.
Hats off the the Panthers! Hats off to the crazies in the Panther Pit! Hats off to all of our fans and support staff who make these home games so special.
The Panthers head on the road this weekend to Centre and DePauw with our gaze set squarely on winning the SCAC championship.  GO PANTHERS!

BSC v Huntindon Monday FEB. 15th (Senior Night)

The game tonight will be the last time our seniors play a game in Bill Battle Coliseum! It should be an exciting game as the Panthers take on in-state rival Huntingdon College. Every senior has played an important role this season and helped to establish BSC Basketball as the one of the SCAC's top teams! They have laid a foundation for the future of the program in NCAA Div III and will always be remembered for their efforts in restarting the program! Thanks again to our 6 seniors: Aaron Parr, Wheeler Flemming, Tyler Marsh, Roger Williams, Nathan West, and Dominic Whicher! Come out and honor these guys and enjoy some fast paced Birmingham Southern Basketball tonight in Bill Battle Coliseum at 7 pm! You may see some interesting mustaches as well!

Panthers win the clash of SCAC First Place Teams

The Panthers split their games on the trip to Texas last week.  After suffering a tough overtime loss at Trinity, a game which featured a Panther comeback of 17 points in the second haldf to send the game to overtime. The Pantherns headed into a showdown of the first place teams in the West of the SCAC, Southwestern, versus the first place team in the East, the BSC Panthers.
The Panthers again fell to a halftime deficit, but thanks to some key three point shots by Nathan West, Kevin Kegarise, Hart Auhamada, Patrick Price, and Jasen Jonus, the Panthers were able to regain the lead and win the game going away.  It was truly an outstanding contribution by all 15 of the Panthers who played in the game.
The victory kept BSC's championship hopes alive, as they sit tied atop the SCAC.
This upcoming weekend will feature two key home SCAC matchups in the friendly confines of "The Battle".  The first will be versus Oglethorpe on Friday, Feb 5th at 8pm. The second will be versus Sewanee at 3:00 pm.
Come out and support your Panthers this weekend!

Panthers Earn a Conference Sweep Over the Weekend

The Birmingham Southern basketball team defeated both Hendrix and Milsaps this past weekend.  With the victories, the Panthers maintained their place atop the SCAC standings.

In the first game, versus Hendrix on Friday, the Panthers won 75-68.  The game was close throughout, and the Panthers won with pressure defense, and a strong finish to the game.

The second game was a great defensive effort by the Panthers, as they held Milsaps to 32% from the field for the entire game.  The Panthers went on to win the game 64-41.

It was a great weekend for BCS Basketball, as the 1990 National Champioship team was honored with a dinner, and a halftime ceremony at Sundays game.

The Panthers will return to action next weekend with another swing through Texas, as they play Trinity and Southwestern.

PANTHERS SPLIT ROAD TRIP OUT WEST

The Men's Basketball team had a great trip out west as we faced Colorado College and Austin College, two teams that sit atop the SCAC West Division. The team fought hard and produced a great win at Colorado College on Friday night 70-65. The Panthers had a chance to pull out the sweep in Texas in the final minute of the game at Austin College but came up short. Despite poor shooting, the team was resiliant enough to show strong defensive efforts and keep a hold on first place in the Eastern Division. Stay tuned for some pictures of the teams trip to Garden of the Gods and the Air Force academy in the coming days!

Even Elvis was "All Shook Up" over the Panthers 18 made 3 pointers in Memphis

The Panthers' Offensive Explosion leads them to Victory

The Panthers went to Memphis with the purpose of a little fun on Bealle Street and a lot more fun on the court at Rhodes College.
The team had a great trip to watch the Memphis Grizzlies play on Friday night, then hit the court for a game with Rhodes on Saturday.
The Panthers and the Rhodes Lynxx played a tight game up until the 4 minute mark left in the first half. From that point until roughly ten minutes left in the second half, the Panthers held Rhodes to 12 points, while in that same time frame scored 48 points.
The offensive explosion was highlighted by strong defensive pressure, and a barrage of three pointers from several players.
The Panthers shot an astounding 18-32 from the 3 pt line and dished out 30 assists on the night showing a tremendous amount of unselfishness and teamwork!
BSC returns to action with a home game tonight vs. Atlanta Christian at 7 pm. This game will be followed by a trip to Colorado College on Friday Jan 15th and Austin College in Sherman, Texas on Sunday the 17th.
We are currently 11-1 and tied atop the SCAC with Colorado College, so this will be a big weekend for the Panthers.
