Panthers Win SCAC Championship!

The Birmingham Southern Panthers won the SCAC Conference Championship for the 2010-2011 season by defeating Centre College in a hard fought battle between the two top seeded teams in the conference on Sunday.  The win wrapped up the SCAC campaign for the Panthers with a 14-2 conference record, and it moved the Panthers to a 21-3 overeall record to this point in the season. The win also extended Southern's home game winning streak to 30 games.
The championship game was a tremendous accomplishment for Coach Cole and a fitting last home game for the four Panther Seniors: Mark Messenger, Patrick Price, Isiah Doaty, and Phil Rogers.

Panthers earn another conference road sweep in thrilling fashion

Griffin scores the game winning basket with under 3 seconds left vs Oglethorpe

The team celebrates during the timeout after Griffin's score.

The Panthers went on the road to earn a 25 point win on Friday night at Sewanee. Southern used a balanced attack and quality minutes to defeat the Tigers handily from the tip off until the buzzer sounded. You can read more about the Sewanee game by clicking HERE .

BSC then went on the road to face conference rival Oglethorpe. The game was close throughout and was a great win to maintain the Panthers place atop the SCAC. The game had a thrilling end that Panther fans will be talking about for a long time. Oglethorpe scored a basket to go ahead of the BSC by 1 point with 8 seconds left in the game. A senior trio made a heady play to regain the lead. Mark Messenger quickly got the ball out of bounds and threw it over the top of OU's press to Patrick Price. Patrick drove the side of the court and hit a streaking Phil Rogers on his way to the hoop. An Oglethorpe player commited a flagrant foul as he chased Phil and took him out when Phil went up for the game winning layup. Phil stepped to the line and knocked down the game tying free throw. The Panther's then ran a baseline out of bounds play to isolate Griffin Schamp, who drove to the bucket and scored a game winning layup with less than 3 seconds on the clock. The Panthers were able to force a turnover on the ensuing play and Oglethorpe took the loss without even getting a shot in the air.

The Panthers retake the floor Wednesday at Huntingdon and then again Saturday for another tough conference road game at Rhodes.  Come out on the road and support your Panthers!

Meet the Panther Juniors

One of the great parts of college basketball is the opportunity for vastly different poeple from different backgrounds to come together for a common purpose. This weeks Meet the Panthers segment features Jasen Jonus and Caleb Lee. They are both great young men who are extremely valuable to our program. I hope you enjoy getting to know them.
